Rugged cell phones are breaking new grounds and we love to see them rumble and tumble come rain or shine, but when a phone has off-road capabilities, we’re definitely excited. Dubbed the Land Rover S1, the phone has been built by Sonim Technologies and is hailed as the world’s toughest mobile to ever see daylight — it’s been dropped from a tall building, stood on by an elephant and roasted in an oven — yet no harm done.
Touted to be the world’s first IP-67 rated GSM mobile, the new Land Rover S1 can be submerged to a depth of one metre, is dust and dirtproof, shockproof and puncture-resistant. And just to prove their point, off-road specialists from Land Rover drove over it to prove that it can withstand 400 kg of weight.

Other than being a tough guy, the new Land Rover S1 boasts a 2-megapixel camera, FM radio, 2GB memory slot, J2ME Java for mobile, WAP browsing through its in-built Opera Mini WAP browser, Bluetooth and built-in A-GPS. It also comes with extra-wide buttons so that you can operated it even if you’re wearing gloves, an extra-loud speaker to make sure you hear it no matter where you are at, and a powerful battery that will last some 1500 hours (62.5 days with our math).
The new Land Rover S1 by Sonim will be available for UK buyers from Go Mobile stores and should be priced at 299.99 pounds (some $490).
