HP have announced that their range of workstation PCs are now to be offered with the Six Core AMD Opteron 2400 Series CPU as an optional upgrade or, if that isn’t quite enough for you, a choice of two Six-Core AMD Opteron processors resulting in a total of 12 processing cores.

Billed as being ideal for complex applications such as 3D content creation, as well as engineering and science applications, the new six core AMD Opteron 2400 Series of CPUs offer up to 34 percent more performance per watt when compared with previous generation quad-core processors and, thanks to the inclusion of AMD HyperTransport 3.0 technology (HT3) you’re looking at interconnect rates of up to a pretty astonishing 4.8 gigatransfers per second. Pair this setup with the optional ATI FirePro V7750 3D workstation graphics solution and the result is a veritable powerhouse of raw power that should breeze through even the most processor intensive of applications.

“HP understands the immense pressure its customers are under to deliver more return on investment in a shorter period of time. By providing the most extreme combination of technologies – up to 12 cores in one workstation – HP continues its commitment to bringing customers leading-edge technologies,” said Jeff Wood, director, Worldwide Marketing, Workstations, HP who announced the introduction of the Six Core AMD Opteron 2400 Series in HPs Workstation line-up.

John Fruehe, director, Business Development, Server Workstation Business, AMD added, “The Six-Core AMD Opteron processor delivers top-line performance with no compromise in feature sets across the product line. Including the Six-Core AMD Opteron processor and ATI FirePro V7750 3-D workstation graphics accelerator in the powerful HP xw9400 Workstation offers customers an optimal combination of computing performance and high-end graphics capability.

Pricing of HP’s XW9400 Professional Workstation starts from just $1,899, however, as you’ll doubtless of gathered, if you want to max out the XW9400 in terms of bolt-on extras you should set aside somewhat more.
