Dell have finally gotten official concerning their new budget business ultraportable, the Dell Vostro 1220. Billed as giving you ‘the freedom to do more while spending less’ the Dell Vostro 1220 comes in 12″ format and, as is always the case with Dell’s offerings, a veritable wealth of end user configurations which, maxed out, will see a 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU paired with 8GB Dual Channel SDRAM under the hood along with Blue-ray combo optical drive and, surprisingly, even an option for a WiMax module.

Available with a choice of operating systems which takes in both Windows Vista (32/64-bit), Ubuntu Linux and FreeDOS, further highlights include HDD capacities up to 500GB or the option to upgrade to a 128GB capacity SSD (Linux based systems are limited to a 16GB SSD) whilst, in terms of additional futures, you can also factor in an optional fingerprint reader or, if you’re really looking for enhanced data security, a 250GB encrypted HHD (inclusive of Wave software).
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity are also up for grabs though it’s a little disappointing to see WLAN merely being optional as opposed to offered as standard (as is the case with the vast majority of ultraportables out there right now).
From a base level perspective, naturally a 1.3 megapixel integrated webcam is in evidence (which, paired with the devices inbuilt speaker and microphone make VoIP communications a breeze) as well as a 3-in-1 card reader, ExpressCard slot, VGA-out and 3 USB 2.0 ports whilst the 12″ display offers up 1280 x 800 resolution. Incidentally the display can also be upgraded to a premium LED screen with anti-glare coating if deemed necessary.
There’s no word from Dell as at the time of writing concerning the Vostro 1220’s pricing structure, however, if its Japanese release is anything to go by, the base level unit will come in at around $790 with the host of optional extras inflating that figure greatly as you tick off those boxes (only to then see the total price and decide you don’t need it maxed out after all).
The moment we get official word on the US pricing structure we’ll endeavour to offer a heads up but, in the meantime, further info can be obtained via the official Vostro 1220 product page.
