If you’re a fan of retro gaming or even if you’re not but previously owned a Commodore 64 and would have jumped at the chance to re-live the days of your youth, we have some bad news – the much anticipated iPhone Commodore 64 Emulator App from Manomio has been rejected by Apple for violating the iPhone SDK agreement.
The Manomio iPhone Commodore 64 Emulator App which, thanks to a deal with Kiloo Aps and Commodore Gaming, is officially licensed, is particularly exciting for a host of reasons, not least of which is the fact that its not only a full speed Commodore 64 emulator but also comes with SID sound emulation, as well as offering a realistic virtual joystick and C64 keyboard.

The Manomio iPhone Commodore 64 Emulator App – which you can see in action below – was submitted along with three individual (officially licensed) gamepacks but, according to TouchArcade, was rejected by the App Store with the following communication:
Thank you for submitting C64 1.0 to the App Store. We’ve reviewed C64 1.0 and determined that we cannot post this version of your iPhone application to the App Store because it violates the iPhone SDK Agreement; “3.3.2 An Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means, including without limitation through the use of a plug-in architecture, calling other frameworks, other APIs or otherwise. No interpreted code may be downloaded and used in an Application except for code that is interpreted and run by Apple’s Published APIs and built-in interpreter(s).”
Not withstanding the fact that Apple have allowed many an emulator though (Sonic, Frotz, Golden Axe to name but three) we think you’ll agree that this is enormously disappointing – especially considering that many, including ourselves, were pretty excited about getting our hands on this.
We await developments with great interest but, for the time being at least, it looks like the C64 Emulator App won’t be appearing in the App Store any time soon – and quite probably never in it’s current full featured state.
Perhaps Apple could be swayed in the face of public opinion? Then again…
