Being displayed at this week’s Computex event, the newly unveiled DigiCube MIDPhone-50, which appears to be set to go head to head with the likes of the Willcom D4 UMPC, comes with 5″ 800 x 480 resolution backlit LED touchscreen and, interestingly, is touted as offering phone functionality – though at this stage full details concerning its capabilities in this respect (as well as regional compatibility) remains a little vague.
Powered by an 1.1/1.6GHz Intel Atom Z500 CPU and based on Intel’s US15W chipset, the DigiCube MIDPhone-50 comes with either 512MB or 1GB DDR2 memory, integrated 16GB SSD, built-in webcam, fully QWERTY keypad with touchpad and, as you’d expect from a MID, embraces Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth wireless connectivity whilst also offering 3.5G voice ready connectivity or WiMax module (again, we should emphasise, details concerning the latter are pretty sparse however).
Measuring in at 171.8 x 84 x 25.5mm and weighing 420g, the DigiCube MIDPhone-50 additionally boasts onboard HD audio as well as USB, mic-in and stereo-out ports, and is billed as running either XP or Vista operating systems but, as impressive as the above specifications are, the DigiCube MIDPhone-50 appears to be somewhat let down by a rather poor battery life of a purported 2 hours (which, let’s be honest here, is just about as reasonable to the same degree that it isn’t impressive).
There’s no word concerning either the DigiCube MIDPhone-50’s pricing or availability at this stage but, if they can up its battery endurance, it could be a MID worth serious consideration (should it ever see its way out of Japan).
