
Speed has become a critical factor with today’s storage, hence why everyone is expecting the new SATA Revision 3.0 specifications to become official. And the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) consortium did just that. Backwards compatible with the earlier versions but maintaining the low cost and low power requirements that made it a “hit”, the new SATA 3.0 is expected to enhance support to multimedia applications and to bring in lightning-fast transfer speeds of up to 6 Gb/s (six gigabytes per second, in case you thought you’ve read it wrong).
Meant for increased functionality, the new SATA 3.0 specifications will feature a new Native Command Queuing (NCQ) streaming command that better accommodates bandwidth-hungry audio and video applications, and a new NCQ Management feature that allows host processing and management of outstanding NCQ commands.
Featuring a small Low Insertion Force (LIF) connector for 1.8-inch storage devices (including SSDs) and another one for 7mm optical disk drives, the new SATA 3.0 proves that we’re definitely boarding for a fast flight …
