It’s good to see that the bods at Creative are still leading the way in terms of creative design flair with the introduction of their new, decidedly budget Creative Zen MX portable media player which sports the same design as its previous Zen players and which bores in terms of features almost to the same extent as it does from an aesthetic standpoint (yes, really, it is possible).

In a thinly veiled attempt to corner the budget PMP market seemingly without putting in any particular effort (very inspiring) the newly announced Creative Zen MX portable media player comes with 2.5″ 320 x 240 resolution display and integrated SDHC port allowing you to supplement storage capacity beyond the 8GB and 16GB onboard capacity offered by the two iterations of the Zen MX to be offered and, frankly, it has to be said that its probably taken me more thought to write this post than it has for Creative to summon up this particular offering (and that’s saying something, isn’t it?).

File format compatibility takes in just about the minimum required to define the Zen MX as a PMP – such as MP3, WMA, JPG and Audible 4 as well as Creative’s CMV video file format – and that’s about your lot.

The 8GB and 16GB Creative Zen MX PMPs are set to hit Japan from 5th May (I’ll just bet the queues are already forming) and come in at the equivalent of $102 and $144 respectively which seems a little optimistic (perhaps desperate) considering that you can get your hands on budget players with far greater capabilities for considerably less. Of course, should you take the latter option you’ll be forgoing the designer Creative badge but, hey, who said you could have it all?
