samsung signpoint m7 notebook hard disk

Samsung have unveiled their new Signpoint M7 500GB 2.5″ notebook hard drive which is aimed at those looking for a more shock resistant hard drive than other traditional drives but, for whatever reason (though cost will doubtless be a factor) wish to steer clear of solid state drives – though the level of ruggedness offered by SSDs far surpasses that offered by traditional HDDs, inclusive of this new Samsung HDD.

The new 5,400rpm Samsung Signpoint M7 500GB hard drive comes enclosed in a hardened shell designed to increase the drive’s resilience to shocks and, to that end, offers a reported shock tolerance of 400G/2ms whilst, thanks to the employment of a new drive controller, also manages to cut the drive’s power consumption by around 25% compared to other comparable HDDs whilst offering a purported 18% increase in access speeds (specifically offering a drive ready time of 4 seconds, 12ms typical seek time and 5.6ms average latency).

Coming with a 8MB buffer and boasting a 2.5W maximum power requirement – and requiring just 0.25W in standby and 0.2W in sleep mode – the new 500GB Samsung Signpoint M7 notebook hard drive is set to commence shipping in Europe and North America later this month along with 250GB, 320GB and 400GB capacity models though there’s no word concerning the Signpoint M7 range’s pricing at this stage.
