Compal Electronic have introduced two new portable media players offering 1080p HD video support, integrated DVB-T digital TV and FM tuners and 7″ WVGA (800 x 480 resolution) touchscreen displays in the form of the Compal APA00 and APA01 PMPs.
Powered by ARM-based Sigma Design EM8622L SoCs and running uCLinux operating systems with custom touchscreen GUIs, both the Compal APA00 and APA01 PMPs come with integrated 1.8″ hard disks offering from 20GB to 80GB capacities, the aforementioned DVB-T digital TV and FM tuners with recording capabilities, 1080pHD native support and, in terms of file format compatibility, will play ball with MPEG 1/2/4, Xvid, WMV9, H.264 video and MP3, WMA, MPEG1/2- Layer 1,2 /WAV(PCM) audio file formats as well as offering compatibility with JEPG, GIF, PNG, BMP image formats.
In terms of input/outputs both the Compal APA00 and APA01 PMPs come with USB 2.0 ports, dual TV-out (YPbPr and Composite) ports, headphone and audio out (though both models sport integrated stereo speakers), and IR for use with remote controls.
Measuring in at 203.5 x 132 x 22mm and weighing 590g, there’s no word concerning either pricing or availability at the time of writing, however, with Compal Electronic primarily serving as an OEM provider we suspect that we’ll have to wait to see which companies pick the devices up – possibly to set against the likes of Archos’s range of Internet Media Tablets – before we can gain specific pricing or availability information.
