Where as, in the not too distant past, eco friendly gadgets may have had a reputation for being, shall we say, fairly uninspiring affairs invariably lacking the scope of features and functionality of their not so eco friendly counterparts, these days are well and truly over and this versatile and not unimpressive new portable media player from Shiro, known as the Shiro SQ-S MP4 Digital Audio Player, serves as a fitting testament as to just how far eco aware gadgetry has come in the past few years.
Coming with a rear mounted solar panel allowing you to fully charge the Shiro SQ-S directly from the sun’s rays in around just 4 hours – though you can also charge the device from a USB port should the sun prove to be elusive – the SQ-S boasts just about every feature you’d want from a portable media player, with a few surprises thrown in.

Sporting a 1.8” 65K color 128 x 160 resolution display, the Shiro SQ-S supports a veritable host of media file types (MP3, WMA, WAV, M4A, APE and OGG, FLAC as well as SMV, BMP, JPG, GIF and TXT) whilst also coming with an integrated FM tuner with RDS support and recoding capabilities (allowing you to record FM broadcasts and, thanks to a built in microphone, voice memos directly to memory) and, once fully charged, either courtesy of its USB connectivity or the integrated solar panel, will deliver up to 35 hours of audio playback or up to 10 hours of video before running out of juice.
The Shiro SQ-S Solar Portable Media Player, which measures in at 11 x 42 x 86mm, comes with 16GB of in built storage capacity which, unfortunately, cannot be supplemented with memory cards on account of the device lacking the required card slot, and will be made available in red, blue or silver, however, at the time of writing, we are unable to ascertain either pricing information or shipping date.
