Cowon have announced that their extremely alluring Cowon S9 Curve PMP, which features a 3.3” 480×272 16 million color AMOLED touchscreen and which is widely seen as going head-to-head with Apple’s iPod Touch, is set for release in the US this December.
Whilst full details Cowon’s new the S9 Curve PMP are somewhat sparse at the time of writing what is known is that the device is powered by a dual core 500MHz processor, and that, apart from sporting an AMOLED touchscreen display with capacitive technology – which offers more vivid colors than standard LCD TFT – the S9 Curve PMP comes with integrated G-Sensor allowing for gesture control and a purported battery life of around an impressive 40 hours (in no small part thanks to the lower power consumption of the device’s AMOLED display).
Additional highlights concerning Cowon’s S9 Curve PMP include an integrated accelerometer – allowing the device to switch automatically between landscape and portrait display modes depending on the orientation of the device – TV out as well as Bluetooth connectivity for wireless audio and either 8GB or 16GB capacities thought the US version will be stripped of the T-DMB mobile TV tuner featured in the Korean version of the S9 Curve PMP on account of lack of support in the US.

No word concerning pricing as at the time of writing though its not unreasonable to expect Cowon to price their S9 Curve PMP extremely competitively in relation to Apple’s iPod Touch (we will, of course, offer a heads up concerning pricing of the S9 Curve the moment this information becomes available to us).
Certainly, if only based on the limited details we have, there’s no doubt that Cowon’s S9 Curve PMP has all the hallmarks of being a serious competitor to the Touch (dependant on unit pricing of course) but quite whether it’ll serve to draw potential purchasers of Apple’s iPod Touch across to the Cowon camp is open to speculation.
We would be interested to know what you think.
