As far as GPS units go, the min Kapten portable GPS system from Kapsys is certainly a somewhat novel device in featuring a screen-free design whilst offering purely vocalised directions in order to assist you in navigating to your chosen destination.
Offering full voice recognition paired with text-to-speech, the Kapsys Kapten has been designed primarily for pedestrians looking for a navigational aid though Kapsys insist that the device can also be used just as easily as an in-vehicle GPS system (though, personally, we cannot envisage not having a visual display to fall back on in the event that we miss a certain voice prompt whist driving).
The Kapsys Kapten, which measures in at a highly portable 74×44×13mm and which weighs in at a mere 50g, utilises a SiRF Star III GPS receiver and comes complete with mapping information for France pre-loaded though a generous 4GB of integrated memory means that there’s plenty of space free to load additional mapping data.
Interestingly, the Kapten, apart from serving as a navigational aid, will also happily play MP3s and even comes with an integrated FM tuner should you yearn for a little background music whilst making your way from A to B and, just to add another feather in its cap, it also sports handsfree Bluetooth capabilities (resulting in a device that’s far from a mere one trick pony).
If you can envisage getting along with a GPS unit sans display and you’re looking for a device that can not only guide you to your destination but can offer a little background music on the way, the Kapsys Kapten may well be worth consideration.
Due to begin shipping from the middle of September, the Kapsys Kapten will set you back a not unreasonable €150.
