Samsung Affordable 128GB SSD

Samsung have announced that they have now begun the mass production of their new 128GB SSDs (Solid State Drives) which, whilst using slower multi-level cell technology to ensure ‘attractive pricing’ still offer write speeds of 70MBps and read speeds of 90Mbps as well as a purported lifespan offering up to 20 times longer than what Samsung term as ‘the generally accepted 4-5 year life span of a notebook PC hard drive’.

‘With the 64 GB and 128 GB MLC SSDs, we are satisfying the density requirements of most business users and many PC enthusiasts, who will appreciate not only the performance gains and added reliability, but also the more attractive pricing,’ said Jim Elliott, vice president, memory marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. who announced that Samsung’s new 128GB SSDs were now entering the mass production phase.

Samsung’s new affordable SSDs come with a brushed metallic housing, measure in at 100mm x 69.8mm with a mere 9.5mm thickness and comprise of 64 MLC NAND flash memory chips of 16 gigabits each paired with optimized single-chip controller technology and advanced flash-management firmware technology and, if Samsung’s sentiments are to be believed, they ought to serve to stir up the SSD market somewhat though at this juncture the point of release pricing remains unconfirmed.
