BBC To Develop iPlayer On Demand Web Video Set Top Box

Following on from and intended to further build upon the enormous success of their iPlayer web TV application it appears that the BBC are set to develop a stand-alone iPlayer set-top box allowing users to plug the device into their TVs and broadband connections to receive streaming TV on demand without the need for a PC in a fashion similar to that offered by Apple’s Apple TV device by means of an IPTV link (though, of course, the service is already accessible via Nintendo’s Wii and Apple’s iPhone.
Whilst the reports are as yet unsubstanciated, it is thought that the BBC is already thought to be engaged in talks with hardware manufactures and content providers with view to realising a stand-alone iPlayer device which could see the BBC compete directly with BSkyB – and, in particular, their Sky+ digital service – whilst also offering further functionality such as on-demand radio.
At the time of writing, however, details remain scant is as far as what may be on offer in terms of the actual hardware (specifically with respect to the device’s envisaged storage capacity).
Of course the BBC is known for openly embracing new technologies and, apart from the rumoured iPlayer set-top box, is also due to participate in closed trials of SHV (Super High Definition) broadcasts in co-operation with Japan’s NHK in September.
