Euro Wii Fit with box

For those of you in the US who are still having issues tracking down Nintendo’s Wii Fit a report just published in the LA Times is sure to leave a somewhat sour taste in your mouth as the report claims that the lack of US supplies have been orchestrated deliberately by Nintendo in order to take advantage of the strong Euro.

Of course supply issues are nothing new when it comes to Nintendo’s Wii, however, according to Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities, the shortage in US supplies of Wii Fit is primarily being occasioned by Nintendo deliberately shipping more units to Europe (some 2 million units to date) whilst reserving a mere 500,000 Wii Fits for the (comparitably huge) US market in what is, according to Pachter, a deliberate move by Nintendo to reap the rewards of the strong Euro whilst the going’s good and whilst the Dollar is weak (even if this is at the expense of US availability).

‘The shortage demonstrates one consequence of the weak dollar. We’re seeing companies ignore their largest market simply because they can make a greater profit elsewhere,’ states Pachter, who adds that ‘They [Nintendo] know that Americans will be just as fat a few months from now.’

Commenting on Pachter’s remarks, Billy Pidgeon, an analyst with research firm IDC, added ‘That’s a tough line to tread. When does the consumer get frustrated and move on? So far, the Wii still has cachet, but the fact that consumers can’t find a Wii or a Wii Fit is definitely a missed opportunity.’

Needless to say, if you’re a US based reader who’s frustrated with not being able to find a Wii Fit we would love to hear your thoughts. Will a continued lack of supply wean you away from purchasing Wii Fit, especially if the lack of supplies are, as Pachter asserts wholly avoidable?

No, I finally gave in and got one off ebay for an (obviously) inflated price. I forgot to preorder one. What bothers me is some ebay stores state they have 300 or so, keeping them hostage for a profit.

Not being able to find a Wii Fit right this minute isn’t going to make me jump ship, but if the lack of availability really is because units are being redirected to EU, it does take Nintendo down a few notches in my book. I work over seas, so hopefully I’ll be able to find one before August 1.

Well, I most likely will give up the hunt…after a few weeks I simply don’t want one as badly, and by the time I happen to notice it available at Wal-Mart (what are we looking at Oct. or Nov?) I really won’t have the desire or the money to buy it.

Hey guys I live in the UK, even if the EU does have more units on their way to us you wouldn’t know, you cannot buy one anywhere here. We bought a Wii a couple of weeks ago assuming that the Wii Fit would be in stores again soon (and also while my 360 was off being repaired having suffered the ring of desth problem!). Still can’t get Wii Fit and am already bored with the Wii having only played on it a couple of times…my girlfriend has ordered a Wii Fit with lots of bundled accessories for £109 (circa $215) as it’s the only way to get one over here, but if I had my way I’d be selling the Wii on eBay…I just can’t believe that every time Nintendo release something it sells out - do they only have two people making these things or what….the PS3/360 were a lot easier to get hold of at release and I don’t buy it that it was because the demand is higher for Wii/Wii Fit. All in all I feel pretty sour about Nintendo and won’t be rushing to buy lots of games, anyway the 360 came back yesterday!!
