Whilst we’ve previously featured other GPS tracking devices allowing you to keep tabs on errant children, pets and Grandpa on his nitro boosted mobility scooter, the Pocketfinder range of trackers are billed by Location Based Technologies as being one of the few GPS trackers that have been designed specifically from the outset with their distinct role in mind.
According to David Morse, co-president and CEO of Location Based Technologies, Inc., ‘Most location-based services today are based on re-packaging existing products…We began with the customer and worked backwards. We designed our products, interface and infrastructure from scratch to meet the needs of a mass market by providing products they will actually use and applications they truly desire.’
The lightweight devices, which are both waterproof and shockproof and come in three distinct flavours designed to track people, pets or luggage, measure in at roughly the size of ‘an Oreo cookie’ and, once purchased, can be used to track people, pets and luggage via an online subscription based service that offers pin-point location details presented on what appears to be the Google Maps service. Interestingly, however, rather than just displaying the location of whatever or whomever is being tracked the online dashboard also offers information such as heading, speed and trip distance (as well as offering an indication as to the tracker device’s current battery status – though the tracker devices offer seven days of endurance based on a full charge which ought to prove more than sufficient in most scenarios).

Naturally, you are also able to set up a series of ‘safety’ and ‘danger’ zones allowing you to virtually fence in, say, your young child or errant grandpa with the tracker giving a warning – either by email, SMS or voice call – when the virtual parameter, or ‘electronic fence’ is breached so if, for example, Grandpa appears to be intent on heading up the freeway into oncoming traffic (again) on his scooter you can take the necessary measures to reel him in. Incidentally, the tracker service also offers a speed alert so if grandpa is doing 65 in a 40 zone you can also give him a quick call on his cell to ask him to ease it off a little as you really cannot afford to pay for another speeding ticket on his behalf this month.
More information concerning Location Based Technologies Pocketfinder GPS trackers and the associated subscription service can be found via the official Pocketfinder website as linked below, however, we can advise that each tracker, which comes with the tracker itself as well as a charging base station, can be pre-ordered now for just shy of $130 though, at the time of writing, the cost of the associated online tracking subscription service – which takes the form of a Standard and Premium service – has not been divulged, so you may want to hold back until the further details are made available.

Ok obviously the units need recharging….so said grandpa is going to stay on top of things when it comes to making sure the transmitter is freshly charged? I doubt it. Useless! Unless you’re going to personally follow through with each of your planted units and charge them yourself. May as well just stalk your marks manually in that case.
