With Creative having just announced their new Vado VF0570-P ‘YouTube’ budget camcorder, designed specifically to cut into considerable budget camcorder market share presently enjoyed by Pure Video’s Flip, and what with a host of other companies vying for a slice of the highly lucrative action – such as Disgo’s Video Plus and Sony’s Net Sharing Cam, to name but two – it was only a matter of time before JVC decided to offer a product billed as specifically catering for the YouTube generation in the form of their up and coming JVC Everio S GZ-MS100 ‘YouTube’ Memory Camcorder.

Billed as being a device that makes ‘sharing simple’, JVC’s Everio S GZ-MS100 ‘YouTube’ camcorder, apart form boasting a decidedly traditionalist design (based on JVC’s Everio G series of hybrid camcorders), naturally supports one-button uploading of video content to YouTube’s video service (a rather prominent sticker serving to remind you of its YouTube capabilities) and, in a bid no doubt to lower unit cost, relies solely on SD or SDHC memory cards for storage capacity.

Seemingly aimed at older YouTubers – the design is, we submit, quite obviously not aimed at appealing to the younger generation and the unit’s price (see bottom of post) would serve to underpin this – JVC’s Gigabrid proprietary engine powered Everio S GZ-MS100 sports a high-quality Konica Minolta lens boasting reasonably impressive 35x optical and somewhat ludicrous 800x magnification capabilities, a 1/6” 680K pixel CCD, built in image stabilisation and a series of recording formats ranging from ultra-fine (8.5Mbps) to ECO (1.5Mbps) with video being stored in MPEG-2 PS file format complete with Dolby Digital stereo sound.

Like JVC’s Everio G Series, released earlier this year, the Everio S GZ-MS100 also features Laser Touch Operation touch sensitive buttons whit the flip out 2.7” LCD screen is also the same as used on the aforementioned G Series and comes with Auto Backlight Control and Auto Power Off (to conserve battery life) complete with an optional Quick Restart mode that will have everything up and running again in around a single second.

The uploading of captured video footage to your PC is facilitated by an integrated USB 2.0 connection or, should you wish, directly via the memory card courtesy of a card reader and, thanks to the inclusion of the CyberLink application, the burning of content to DVD storage media is catered for out of the box. Uploading directly to YouTube, as previously mentioned, is also possible with the use of the GZ-MS100’s upload button which will, helpfully, not only limit the duration of video clips to 10 minutes (ensuring that the resulting file size does not exceed YouTube upload limits) but will also launch a supplied application which will, according to JVC’s press release, upload your footage with just a few mouse clicks.

Battery life is purported to be in the region of just over 2 hours based on a full charge though further endurance can be obtained through the utilisation of higher capacity batteries (notably the BN-VF823 and BN-VF815 battery packs which offer just over 4 hours and just over 6 hours of sustained operational endurance respectively).

A gaggle (?) of YouTube Camcorders

JVC’s Everio S GZ-MS100 Memory Camcorder is due for release in June and will carry a price tag of around $350 which is markedly higher than the likes of Pure Video’s Flip, Disgo’s Video Plus and Sony’s Net Share Cam but, in terms of capabilities, there’s no doubt that the premium is justified as, whilst the GZ-MS100 is one of many ‘YouTube cams, its capabilities and specifications are far removed from the wholly rudimentary capabilities of the aforementioned devices.
