Asus Eee Pc 901

Reports just surfacing suggest that Asus has reconsidered including WiMAX connectivity as a stock feature in its up and coming Eee PC 901 mini notebook on the basis that coverage is not deemed as being sufficient to support as at the point of release which, if the reports are to be believed, somewhat fly in the face of Asus’s previous convictions that at least one of the Eee PC range would support 4G connectivity.

According to the report Asus is particularly concerned that coverage through the Sprint and Clearwire networks will not be sufficient to warrant stock WiMAX capabilities being supported by their new Eee PC 901 notebooks though Asus are on record as offering WiMAX support in its Eee range on at least one model in the range. It was widely speculated that the new Eee PC 901 would therefore come with WiMAX capabilities, but, certainly if the report is to be believed, that may now transpire not to be the case.

It’s not all doom, gloom and despondency, however, as WiMAX capabilities will, according to the report, be available via contract orders and Asus are still committed to supporting WiMAX in its larger PCs such as the V1, Lamborghini VX2, and U6 (14”/15.4”) models.

Personally, if I were a potential customer living in what is, or what is soon to become, a WiMAX supported area then I would see this as nothing more than a kick in the teeth but, if one figures in the bigger picture – and if the report transpires to prove correct – Asus can hardly be blamed for having second thoughts concerning stock WiMAX support at this juncture though such a perspective will certainly be considered by many as being less than ‘forward thinking’.
