LCDTVA Logo on LCDTV

The LCD TV Association, a global non-profit, marketing trade association ‘formed to help the entire LCD supply chain, retail channel and consumers’ has announced its new GreenTV initiative which, it hopes, will serve to reduce the power consumption of LCD TV units by at least 30% and result in LCD TVs carrying their GreenTV Certified Logo – allowing consumers to make a more carbon footprint aware choice at the point of purchase.

Bruce Berkoff, Chairman of the LCD TV Association, introduced the new GreenTV initiative today, stating; ‘We believe LCD TVs already consume the least energy to build, use and dispose of, but we want to make them even better in the future and have a lighter ‘carbon footprint’ on the Earth by having the most recyclable parts and highest possible energy efficiencies. This will involve the use of less heavy metals, ambient light sensors and smarter electronics very soon, as well as more LED backlights with spatial and content-based dimming and energy savings over time, and many other improvements.’

According to the LCD TV Association’s press release, figures released by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimate that over 4 Terewatt-hours of electricity were consumed by TV sets in 2005 in the US alone and, whilst the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is due to roll out their new ‘Energy Star’ program for flat panel TVs by the end of 08, the LCDTVA believe that their GreenTV initiative will work alongside this program to further cut the impact of LCD TV units on the environment working from the assembly of units (specifically materials of manufacture) to issues such as standby power usage and power on electricity consumption.

Further information concerning the work of the LCDTVA and their GreenTV initiative can be obtained via their less than inspiring website. (Note to LCDTVA – perhaps it would have been a good idea to make your GreenTV logo available along with your press release in a graphic bigger than a mere 39 pixels in height or, at least, via your site).
