Sony’s highly desirable 10.2 megapixel Alpha A200 DSLR, successor to Sony’s A100 DSLR, has been named as the ‘Best Entry-level DSLR in Europe’ at the prestigious TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) awards according to a press release just hitting the wires.

The editorial panel of the TIPA awards judging citation states:

‘Easy to use, easy to carry and offered at a very attractive price with its 18-70mm zoom lens, the Sony Alpha 200 is a dream camera for beginners who want to start enjoying all the benefits of D-SLR photography. Its 10.2 megapixel sensor delivers top quality images up to ISO 400 and beyond, and the autofocus system is fast and accurate. The large LCD screen gives a clear, bright display when reviewing images, and both the in-camera image stabilisation and the anti-dust system are very effective in use. A superb, low-cost camera that’s easy to use, and a worthy winner of this award.’

Sony’s A200 DSLR, which is presently retailing for around $520, sports a 10.2 megapixel Super HAD CCD offering resolutions of up to as 3,872 x 2,592 pixels and sports a 2.7” LCD screen, ISO sensitivities of 100 – 200, 9-point center cross AF sensor, 40-segment honeycomb metering system, 3FPS burst mode and, if you’re looking to step up from a compact digital camera to one of the ‘big boys’ was already worth serious consideration. (Incidentally, if you would like to see a somewhat fuller spec sheet, you can do so here).

Needless to say this award will serve not only to bring Sony’s A200 to the forefront of people’s minds once again but, we suspect, won’t do anything to hurt sales.

Well done Sony (can you send us one now, please).
