LaCie 500GB Rugged Portable Hard Disk

LaCie’s Rugged Portable Hard Disk range which, incidentally, was designed by Neil Poulton – who also happens to be responsible for this monolithic beauty also from LaCie – has now been expanded to include a 500GB Rugged Portable Hard Disk which is due to become available in two versions offering differing connectivity options.

Designed to take more than its fair share of knocks, LaCie’s Rugged Portable Hard Disk comes scratch protected aluminum shell framed with shock resistant rubber bumper in a particularly fetching orange and will be offered either with just USB 2.0 or FireWire 800, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 connectivity options dependent on model, which will retail for around £340 and $400 respectively.

Capable of withstanding drop heights of up to 35”/90cm – though LaCie helpfully point out that its best not to drop the drive during operation – both drives are already listed on LaCie’s online store though, at the time of writing, are presently yet to be made available.

Great blogging about those monster half terabyte-sized drives. There is one thing that I think they are all missing, a portable universal SearchOS that will run on those monster drives. Fortunately, there is an answer, Gaviri Universal SearchOS http://www.gaviri.com. The drives are indeed great for carrying data around, we just need a good portable search engine to help us quickly and securely find the content on-the-go. Browsing through half a terabyte of data or using windows search are not options.

Some may have considered this somewhat ’spammy’ but, as we think it may be of interest to our readers, we’ll let it ride (on this occasion)complete with links.
