Iomega Media Xporter External Hard Disk Drive [Portable HDD Aimed At Gaming Consoles]

Iomega have announced a new external hard disk drive, known as the Iomega Media Xporter, which is being touted specifically for use with gaming consoles such as Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s Playstation 3 offering the end user ‘convenient new way to enjoy music, digital movies, and photos through the family game console, without the need of a PC or digital media adapter’.

The wallet sized 160GB Media Xporter portable HDD, which has been exhaustively tested to ensure hassle free compatibility with the aforementioned gaming consoles, connects via USB 2.0 and is said to offer enough extra storage capacity to hold up to 640,000 photos, over 2,900 hours of music or 240 hours of video and, thanks to its USB connectivity – allowing it to draw its required power via the console itself – it dispenses with the need for its own, separate power adapter.

According to Ralf San Jose, global product manager for HDD Products,
Iomega Corporation, ‘The new Media Xporter Drive is a total solution from Iomega that includes software to convert most kinds of video formats for use with an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3…That means a game console can run an entire media library, be the family video and photo viewer, not to mention run favorite music playlists. The Iomega Media Xporter Drive makes home entertainment accessible and portable in a way that’s fresh and relevant for today’s home gamer.’

The Media Xporter comes complete with video conversion software allowing for the easy conversion of video file formats into formats compatible with both the aforementioned consoles whilst Iomega’s press release also notes that the Prism Video Converter MX software can also ‘be downloaded free of cost to
convert input files in formats such as QuickTime, AVI, VOB and others, into MPEG-4 files that are playable by the game consoles.’

Whilst Iomega’s Media Xporter is being branded – either somewhat bravely, or somewhat stupidly (time will tell) as a games console targeted external storage device it’ll naturally also work as a standard PC storage solution and has just been made available for around $120 / €99.
