Whilst not quite as desirable, certainly from an aesthetic perspective, as LaCie’s breathtakingly beautiful Monolithic External Hard Drive previously featured on TFTS, Segate Technology’s newly announced Maxtor BlackArmor external HDD certainly works alongside LieCie’s HDD to significantly raise the bar as far as external HDD design is concerned - thankfully the dull, beige boxes of old are long gone.
Apart from its admittedly rather alluring styling, Segate’s 160GB capacity Maxtor BlackArmor portable storage device is also noteworthy on account of the unit offering AES government grade encryption via Segate’s ‘Secure’ hardware based technology, bypassing the need to install related software based encryption solutions. The result is a secure storage device that, thanks to storing its security keys and cryptographic processes internally, should offer far greater protection from determined hackers than devices that rely wholly on software based solutions to protect your files from unauthorised access whilst not compromising user-friendliness.

LaCie’s Monolithic HDD
In an age when we increasingly store so much of our lives on our computers and when identity theft is proving evermore lucrative for those intent on relieving you of your hard earned money, devices such as Segate’s Maxtor BlackArmor are not just a means of adding further storage capacity as and when required but are the first line of defence in data protection. And, in offering a fusion of great styling paired with AES government grade encryption we don’t doubt that the Maxtor BlackArmor is destined to positively fly off the shelves – especially when you consider that the device will purportedly retail for a mere $150.
