One of the problems with headphones is that, unless you listen at especially low volumes, they can serve to block important aural stimuli resulting in reduced awareness of your surroundings – and this is especially true for cyclists and joggers – but Orbitsound’s new T3 serves to circumvent such issues by producing what the company describe as a ‘stereo aura’ around you, thus dispensing with the need to wear headphones whilst listening to your MP3 player or any other portable digital entertainment device.
Designed to be worn around the neck, Orbitsound’s T3, which is roughly the size of a large mobile phone, works by utilising Orbitsound’s airSOUND technology to allow for single source stereo sound whilst using your chest cavity as a resonator to produce a spatial sound field around you. The result is full stereo sound without the need to wear headphones, though it should be added that the T3 also comes with a headphone socket to allow for private listening when required.
Of course, on account of how the T3 works, it can also be used much in the same way as a standard speaker as long as the unit is placed against a flat surface, such as a desk (though we’ve heard that windows work especially well as resonators) – thus making Orbitsound’s T3 equally suitable for use with laptops/notebooks, PSPs, portable DVD players and so forth.
Charged via a built-in USB connection the Orbitsound T3 is reported to have a battery life of around 12 hours based on a full two hour charge and is due to be released this summer with a price tag of around $150.
