XBox 360 DivX

There’s been a great deal of speculation as to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 gaining its much requested DivX compatibility some time in the future but, at last, there appears to be a glimmer of hope on the horizon thanks to a inadvertent slip by Kevin Hall, a company spokesperson, whilst being probed by JP Morgan Analyst Paul Coster at the JP Morgan SmMid Cap Conference.

In an awkward exchange between Hell and Coster, it would seem that discussions are well underway with Microsoft concerning a DivX compatibility upgrade:

Coster - “Just a minor point here, but there was a recent Microsoft (MSFT) conference where I believe their media extender now incorporates the DivX codec on it, is that correct? Can you confirm that and does that mean we’re soon going to see Xboxes with DivX on them?

Hell - “Yes! that, uh, we’re in discussions with Microsoft on that at this point in time, so I can’t go into any great detail on that. Um that is not a certified, that is not a certified or licensed product at this time.

At this point DivX CFO Dan Halvorson purportedly acted to abruptly change the subject – which was discussed no further.

It’s thought that the upgrade could occur in December – though this is, of course, mere speculation as this juncture.

Needless to say we’ll be keeping our ears firmly grounded in order to offer further clarification the moment any further information becomes available.
