According to a press release from Segate, anyone who has purchased one of their Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 external hard disk drives since August 2007 to date may have received a unit pre-infected with Virus.Win32.AutoRun.ah which will not only search for passwords relating to a host of online games (including World of Warcraft) prior to sending them back to a server located in China but which can act to disable your virus detection software – thus leaving the doors well and truly open for further additional virus infections.
The online games affected are as follows:
- World of Warcraft
- WSGame
- 91.com
- Woool
- rxjh.17game.com
- TianLongBaBu
- AskTao
- Perfect World (Wanmei Shijie)
If you have purchased a Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 since August to the time of writing (12/11/07) we advise that you act to update your virus detection software immediately.
Concerned owners of Maxtor Personal Storage 3200’s can read Segate’s press release which details all virus detection software that has now been updated to detect the threat as well as offering contact details should you wish to contact them (express your frustrations) concerning this issue.
Segate have now taken action as far as all further units are concerned.
