Apple’s Legal Team Targets Websites Using Trademarked iPhone Name

Websites using Apple’s trademarked iPhone term in their names have already begun to receive letters from Apple’s much feared legal team in a move that’s sure to send shockwaves through the blogging community and occasion more than its fair share of controversy, according to reports surfacing today.

According to Slashgear, whose sister site has already changed its name from ‘MYiPhone’ to ‘MYiTablet’, sites such as ModMyiPhone and EverythingiPhone have already received their letters and, if you own a site using the term ‘iPhone’ in its title you’ll no doubt getting your own letter any day now.

Certainly, what cannot be disputed is that Apple are quite patently within their rights to protect their copyrights but we cannot help but feel that they could be in danger of shooting themselves in the foot here. After all, whilst a host of ‘Made for Adsense’ sites (MFAs) will no doubt be hit hard, there are, as mentioned above, other sites out there that, if anything, have helped Apple by not only feeding and perpetuating the buzz concerning their new phone but have doubtless helped sales by ceaselessly publicising the product.

We await the inevitable fallout in forums the world over.

What’s your take on Apple’s move? We would be interested to hear your opinions.
