Nokia N810 Pocket Touchscreen Wi Fi Internet Tablet and GPS Navigator

Heralded by Nokia as marking a ‘new phase in portable internet communication’, the N810 has been designed from the outset to bring the functionality of the internet to your pocket in a single, versatile wi-fi touchscreen device that’s no bigger than a cell phone allowing you to trawl the net, play media files and even navigate via satellite – and yes, you can even use it as a phone, though only via VOIP.

According to Ari Virtanen of Nokia, the N810 ‘packs the power of a traditional computer into a pocket-sized format. Its open standard technology accelerates the convergence of multiple functionalities and services into a single device….Our new Nokia N810 offers users a true Web 2.0 experience in a compact, stylish, yet affordable package - it connects people to what matters to them.”

Based around a 4.13” 800×480 resolution colour touchscreen – which can be used as a screen based keypad to supplement the slide out QWERTY keyboard – and powered by Linux, the N810 will allow you to check your e-mail accounts, view YouTube videos, surf the net (using a Mozilla based browser), instant message your friends and even update your bog when in range of available wi-fi hot spots (having referred to your Wi-Fi detecting T-shirt to gauge signal strength) or will act as a fully featured video and MP3 media player when internet connectivity is unavailable – making it a great travelling companion.

Curiously, however, the N810 does not serve as a conventional cell phone with phone functionality instead coming courtesy of Skype with the inclusion of a VGA camera allowing for video calls (a curiously bold move on Nokia’s behalf).

However, not withstanding the above, one of the main selling points concerning the N810 is undoubtedly the addition of an integrated GPS receiver which offers map based navigation as well as serving to highlight points of interest whilst on your travels which can be upgraded to via a Wayfinder plugin to become a fully fledged, voice equipped system offering verbal navigation either when walking, cycling or travelling by car.

Offering the sort of internet based functionality that really ought to have been seen with Apple’s iPhone (alas, that was never quite to be) the Nokia N810 is due to become available from mid November in the US and will set you back around $475 (excluding tax).
