We previously featured the rather slick Wattson Wireless Electricity Monitor and, whilst this particular gadget known as the Energy Joule pretty much serves the same function, it also comes with wireless weather forecasting thanks to its ability to receive and decode signals from the Ambient Infocast Network. One slight problem – it’s currently only available for US users who purchase their electricity supply from Consumer Powerline. But, as a self –empowering gadget, we can only hope that further suppliers take it, or a comparable device, on board both in the US and internationally as information is power (which, ironically, can only help to reduce our power consumption and therefore our bills).
The Energy Joule from Ambient Services comes with a bright LCD display and simply plugs into an electricity outlet. Once plugged in the device will give you a visual indication as to the current cost of your electricity as well as your current usage thanks to two bars wither side of the screen. And, cleverly, in order to assist at a glance monitoring of your power consumption the device’s screen will also light up in either green, yellow or red so you can gauge just how much your power is costing you and adapt your usage accordingly.
The Energy Joule will also offer you an up to the minute weather forecast (handy for those who don’t own a weather forecasting umbrella) which, apart from being genuinely handy will also allow you to configure your heating accordingly based on temperature predictions (thus saving more power).

By offering a quick and easy representation of your power consumption and the relative cost we don’t doubt that significant reductions in bills can be gained as it’s all to easy to end up spending a fortune on something that is otherwise (at best) difficult to consistently monitor. Surely just a matter of time until devices such as this are offered as part of any new electricity provider’s service (if not automatically included in all new builds homewise).
Further information concerning this great gadget can be obtained from the Ambient Services website and, if you live in the US, the company is actively seeking your representation so that the system can be used with other service providers.
