Polaroid, who built their reputation with their series of instamatic cameras, have announced that they are to release a range of new digital devices one of which is a new portable digital media player.
The Polaroid digital media player offers MP3 and MP4 video compatibility, thanks to the devices 2.2 inch 320 x 240 colour TFT screen, as well as digital picture album functionality and a built in FM tuner.
The Polaroid player (which appears to be aimed squarely at the low end of the digital media player market) comes with a somewhat underwhelming 512MB of internal storage capacity that, thankfully, can be supplemented with the use of MicroSD memory cards and, whilst pricing is yet to be confirmed, it’s expected to be in the sub £100 range.
Looking at the product image, we doubt that the likes of Apple, Trekstor or iRiver are quivering in their boots and we are slightly surprised that Polaroid have omitted the addition of a cell phone type camera in the unit but, with this player seemingly designed with affordability in mind, it would appear that base level functionality is very much the order of the day.
We would have said that this could prove to be the ideal digital media player for those on a tight budget but with SanDisk having recently announced its cool Sansa Clip MP3 Player we think we’d be more than happy to dispense with MP4 compatibility completely and just plump for SanDisk’s player instead.
