Having just posted about the Ducati inspired USB flash drive where we offered somewhat of a rant as to how making something from gold isn’t a short cut to desirability we immediately stumbled upon this 18K Gold iPod Shuffle. The question is, how should we approach this? Are we going to take a hypocritical stance I wonder, and proclaim its brilliance?
Well, no.
It’s not that we don’t like it (we are not overly struck with it, either) it’s just that this ongoing trend to bling-out gadgets out by throwing precious metals and perhaps the odd precious stone into the equation doesn’t do anything for us. It’s all a little too obvious to the point where we actually think that it’s all becoming overtly crass.
It’s all a matter of personal taste, but the logic seems to be: if something is made from gold it must therefore be desirable. Sorry, we just don’t agree – it’s all too contrived, and in some way we feel that it’s also rather patronising (simple: Gold = Desirable). Well, we’re sorry to disappoint but for us the notion of desirability is not this simple – though we will be interested to see whether we are in the minority here (perhaps we are – perhaps it really is this simple, in which case expect to see a blinged out gold TFTS site redesign sometime next week).
Produced by Xexoo, the 18K Gold iPod Shuffle will set you back £10,000 (that’s approximately $20,530 / €14,869 at the time of writing).
