4 Port USB Hub Clock with Letter Opener

Initially when we came across this four port USB hub complete with digital clock and an inbuilt electronic letter opener we thought it was more than a little gimmicky but now, as we write this, we’re not so sure. In fact, we would even go so far as to say that the very idea of fusing an electronic letter opener with a USB hub is actually quite a neat idea as far as desktop gadgets are concerned.

One slightly curious fact about this device, however, is that, whilst you would expect its letter opener to be powered by its USB connection it actually transpires that this functionality is powered by three AA batteries – though this, we suspect, is simply the result of the associated motor requiring more juice than the trusty universal serial bus is capable of providing.

That said, the product specifications on the website are not especially clear:

Alarm Clock

Letter Opener

USB hub function

4 USB 1.10 port (Type B)

USB hub function

4 USB 2.0 port (Type C)

Type A without USB hub function

Power: 3xAA batteries

This would seem to indicate that three models of this 4 Port USB Hub Clock with Letter Opener are available – namely type A, type B and type C – with type B offering USB 1.0 connectivity, type B offering USB 2.0 connectivity and type A offering no connectivity whatsoever – thus rendering the device a mere battery operated letter opener.

Which brings us to the following question: why do we care? I mean, its a letter opener for Pete’s sake.

We’ll be getting excited about digital watches next. (Oh, sorry, we already have - several times).
