iPod TipKalc – Split Bills the Easy Way

Following a meal out with friends the end of the evening invariably consists of a debate concerning the bill and what tip, if any, should be given. Unfortunately, certainly in the case of the majority of meals I’ve attended, this tends to coincide with the realisation that it’s not just you who has consumed enough alcohol to drop a horse.

The result is a wall of blank expressions as the bill is placed on the table whilst everyone waits to see who will be the first to try to split the bill courtesy of a list of calculations scribed on a paper napkin. Then, after ten minutes of head scratching, and a set of inconclusive equations that makes Einstein’s Theory of Relativity look positively simple, it’s decided that it’s probably best to get another round of drinks in.

And so it goes on, with a series of amended bills arriving at the table until someone decides to stump up the cash on the premise that someone has to and that they are so drunk they are past caring anyway, resulting in sighs of relief all round.

It is not until the morning after, as you slip your hand into your wallet to fork out for the week’s food shopping (on the premise that your partner paid for the last three week’s shopping) that you realise that the fool that paid for everyone was you. This results in an argument in the middle of the shop, which leads on to a mature chat at home about the future of the relationship and you storming out of the house for dramatic effect only to shift your car into reverse and run over Tiddles the Wonder Cat. Divorce ensues and, within a year you’re standing outside the very same restaurant that started it all in nothing more than your boxer shorts asking for handouts.

If only you had had this TipCalc software loaded on your Apple iPOD – which you’ve just exchanged for a bottle of strong cider – that fateful day. Things could have been so very different. You could have simply spun the navigation wheel to display the bill total and it would have worked out everything for you, including how much you should offer as a tip.

For an outlay of a mere $4.99 you could still be sat in a warm home, surrounded by doting children with the sweet scent of lamb hotpot laying heavy on the air. The very thought brings a tear to your eye as it begins to snow and you make your way to the underpass, clutching your newly acquired bottle of cider, for a little shelter.

The realisation that $4.99 would also have been more than enough to purchase a book teaching basic mathematics never occurs to you as you disappear, shivering, into the all consuming shadows, never to be seen again.
