The Fire Extinguishing Flower

Morita Fire Extinguisher FlowerEarlier this week we presented a video showing the Japanese King Penguin that likes nothing better than to go out shopping. Well, if only Lala could be trained to use this curious flower shaped device (which also happens, somewhat unsurprisingly, to originate from Japan) then she could not only take responsibility for the weekly shop but she could also potentially save lives by extinguishing any oil fires resulting from the preparation of the evening meal she kindly brought home.

Okay, so it’s a supremely tenuous link, but the rather surreal image of a King Penguin putting out a kitchen fire with a flower somehow appeals. (Forgive me – it’s been one of those days).

Created by Morita Corporation, who are best know for manufacturing some pretty serious fire trucks, the flower shaped fire extinguisher contains a special fire retardant that, when placed in burning oil serves to suppress the flames and, by way of convenience, the stem also contains a magnet so that the flower can be clipped to the refrigerator so its sure to be at hand should the chip pan suddenly erupt.

Admittedly it’s an odd concept, but its also a great idea and we think it should be made available the world over.

You can link to the English translation of the Japanese Morita site via this link for further details as well as a video of the amazing fire extinguishing flower in action.
