BumpTop 3D Document PileThere are already a number of programmes that will bring a 3D element to the desktop of your computer but BumpTop 3D certainly looks the most promising and exciting of the newer concepts being currently developed.

As you can see from the video presentation after the jump, BumpTop 3D allows you to literally throw your documents around your desktop in a more natural fashion, as though they are physical items, complete with realistic simulated interactions with other items – documents can push other documents out of the way, can be piled up in a corner or neatly stacked, all with particular gestures created by a graphic pen.

The video presentation below shows the BumpTop 3D desktop in action, all controlled by the user via a graphic pen. The realistic interactions between files is of particular note as is the series of pen gestures the operator uses to neatly stack and explore the items on the 3D desktop.

It’s certainly impressive stuff, and it will be fascinating to see whether the project will develop further into a final, end-user product for use with Vista and what affect the GUI will have on overall system performance.

If you would like to read more about this concept, the creators of BumpTop 3D have released a ten page PDF document that offers an in-depth explanation and exploration of the program as it presently stands, which can be downloaded to read at your leisure directly from here. If you want to access the main page, however, you can do so via this link.

By way of a little bonus, I could not resist including another video that, if you have seen the video above, I am sure you’ll find rather amusing – it had me in stitches. Taken from YouTube, this video is a hilarious parody of BumpTop 3D where its author is trying to apply BumpTop 3D navigational methodology to his real life office desk (complete with pen gestures) with limited success.

It is nice to see that the developers of BumpTop 3D have even included a link to this video on their own page.
