The new version of Google’s free web Accelerator is now available for download. Compatible with both Explorer and Firefox, Google cites that the accelerator will drastically reduce page loading times by dynamically prefetching data and compressing pages prior to them being fed through to your browser.
The accelerator is optimised for faster connections so dial-up users will see little by the way of improvement to page load speeds. As well as coming with a number of user-definable preferences, the program also comes with a tool that measures the time the accelerator has saved you whilst browsing though you’ll have to have surfed a while before this feature has gained enough data to offer this information.
According to the official Google Web Accelerator site, the program works by;
- Sending your page requests through Google machines dedicated to handling Google Web Accelerator traffic.
- Storing copies of frequently looked at pages to make them quickly accessible.
- Downloading only the updates if a web page has changed slightly since you last viewed it.
- Prefetching certain pages onto your computer in advance.
- Managing your Internet connection to reduce delays.
- Compressing data before sending it to your computer.

“..dynamically prefetching data..”
Great. So Google is reading our minds now.
It was only a matter of time, I guess.
I installed this program last night after reading this post. The EULA for the install is “not your usual yada yada” so be sure to read it. Otherwise, this seems like a cool program as it claims to have saved me a total of 46 seconds so far.
I thought I’d spend those saved 46 seconds writing this comment.
Ok, now I’m at 22.8 minutes.
Honestly, for some reason I’m more than a little unnerved by this.
