geekclocksheaderAre you still telling the time via a standard analogue or digital clock?

Perhaps its time to look for something a little more modern in its approach to watching the seconds, minutes and hours of your life drift into the past.

With the new cool being distinctly geek in style, Thoughts from the Sidelines looks at a few time keeping devices that are not only a little out of the ordinary but that are bound to work to underline your geek status as well as being great conversational pieces.

tfretro

Fresh from Tokyo, the TokyoFlash Retrofit fits neatly into the category of things that ought not to be cool but somehow just are. Available in Gunmetal, silver and gold and with an option of blue, green or red (on the gold version) LEDs this watch looks like its come straight from the set of the original StarTrek. Shouting “Beam me up” into this watch would appear to be almost obligatory.

TIX LED Clock

$49.99

tix

A wall mounted or table clock that can be displayed horizontally or vertically, this is bound to grace any discerning geek’s room. The TIX displays the time via an abstract series of LEDs that can, apparently, be read in a host of differing ways – though quite how it all works wholly eludes me. Featuring three levels of brightness, the TIX is available in silver or black and can be set to update every second, every four seconds or every minute.

Scope Wrist Watch

£70

scopewatch

Another watch from the fantastic TokyoFlash site, the Scope shows you your exact position in time via a scope rather than numbers or hands, though reading the time with this device may take a while to learn. According to the site “Reading the time is simple. The vertical line indicates the Hour & the horizontal is for Minutes.
Minutes on the main screen are in groups of 5 (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 etc) then add the number of Red LED’s shown on the right. So 25 + 2 = 27 minutes.” Have you got that?

alprojection

Looking like the cross between a safe and a computer, the Aluminium Box Daylight Projection Clock will beam up to a 4 foot image of the time on walls even in daylight conditions courtesy of its high powered halogen bulb. How do you tell the time with any of them? I can’t work it out.

In theory I *think* I might be able to tell the time with two of the above devices, but some of them…well I think they would be quite beyond me. I must admit there are a couple of the less wacky watches on the TokyoFlash site that I am looking at ordering (geek alert)!! :-)
