RC HelicopterI have had this clip on my hard disk for some considerable time, so why I have only got round to posting it now is beyond me as it is a gem. Even if you don’t think that this clip will be of interest to you I would urge you to take a look as I promise that it will amaze you (trust me).

This video - which is one of two videos in this post - serves to show just what can be achieved by a modern remote controlled helicopter when a master of the trade is at the controls – and seeing is very much believing.

Are you sitting comfortably? If so, click the video link featured below and prepare to be truly astounded.

For those unfamiliar with the basic control system of helicopter it should be noted that they are notoriously difficult to fly in that they require the pilot to use both hands and both feet in unison to control the craft.

In essence – and in simplified terms - the primary flight controls are the Collective, which controls the vertical movement (height) and the Cyclic which controls the lateral direction of the helicopter in combination with the pedals which work very much like the rudder of a fixed wing aircraft - except, in the case of rotary wing aircraft the pedals control the tail rotor.

The Collective and the Cyclic are governed by the pilot’s hands and the pedals by the pilot’s feet which therefore requires a great deal of coordination and, though obviously, in the case of RC helicopters, the operator does not use his feet, but the basic principles remain the same.

Out of interest, whilst many of the manoeuvres pulled by this RC helicopter would not be entirely possible in a real, full scale, helicopter, you would no doubt be very surprised at what can actually be achieved in a real machine in the right hands, as this bonus video shows (featuring a BO105).

(22.4MB)

The clip is from a German television show (Raab in Danger), and the pilot has been tasked to try to scare the programme’s presenter as much as he can. Needless to say, the pilot concerned certainly lives up to the challenge as he flies a series of gut-wrenching manoeuvres that have to be seen to be believed. Of special note this clip also shows an inverted spin – something I had never seen a helicopter pull off until I saw this clip. Not for the faint hearted.

If you are interested in reading more about how helicopters fly having seen this video, you can do so by clicking this link which will take you to a far less condensed explanation of rotary wing flight.

I hope that you have enjoyed this post, and the videos.

That first video is great. That must take alot of practice and coordination (to fly/pilot both machines).

I play Battlefield 2 sometimes and I’ve learned to stay away from piloting the helicopters as they have the same collective/pitch/rotate control scheme. Though, it’s amazing to watch someone who knows how to handle it as it’s very agile (and deadly).

And to think that helicopters were initially developed only as observation platforms, until some bright spark decided to strap some unguided rockets on one - and the gunship was born.

Modern battlefield helicopters, such as the Apache, are lethal machines. Along with the A10 Thunderbolt aircraft, a tank commanders worse fear.

Apache wont stand a chance against the Mi28. Read up on one of the recent test flights they conducted right here in the u.s. of a. and as sad as it is we are few steps behind in that respect. Apache look a lot better imho. awesome videos btw.

where can i order the amazing helicopter

Mario - depends on where you live as to where would be the best place to shop. Have you tried Google? Alternatively, you might be interested in the RC helicopter detailed below as a starter.
