silkwormThose who follow a healthy lifestyle may soon find themselves eating silkworms, as it would seem that consuming these worms is the most efficient way to get conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) into our bodies.

The fatty acid known as CLA is widely thought of as being a particularly effective means of not only protecting the body against cancer, but also to assist in strengthening out immune systems as well as potentially aiding weight loss.

Trials with feeding pigs and poultry with CLA rich foods, having not proved especially successful, so researchers based in the US and Korea began to experiment with feeding mulberry leaves coated with CLA to silkworms only to find that the worms not only ingested the CLA rich food but that their bodies retained high levels of CLA in their bodies for prolonged periods after.

But what if you couldn’t stomach eating silkworms as part of your health plan? The good news is that the researchers also found that common houseflies are a possible edible alternative.

Silkworm risotto anyone? Or perhaps a housefly salad?

I have inadvertently eaten bull’s semen whilst living in Berlin, courtesy of a Bravian friend of mine. He didn’t tell me what it was until I’d covered all my food with it and eaten the lot.

If ever I needed a pint, it was then!
