Stars and StripesFollowing the appalling scenes of 9/11 one thing in particular came to symbolise the united sense of grief, the hope and the spirit of renewal throughout the American Nation. This was, of course, the small flag raised by three firemen on a pole jutting out from the scenes of complete devastation where the World Trade Centre once proudly stood.

However, according to news reports, the stars and stripes which emblazoned the covers of newspapers and magazines the world over, has long since been mislaid and, amidst what appears to be a far reaching cover-up, a differing flag has since been used in its place whilst being openly touted as the being genuine article.

It now transpires that the flag, which was secured from a yacht moored on the Hudson River, was carried by New York’s mayor to a Yankees Baseball game and even flown a carrier from US battle fleet, may not have been the original flag at all as it is thought that this may have gone missing only days after having been raised at the site of the twin towers.

The fact that this new flag was obviously an impostor was noticed by the very fireman who took it from the yacht, Dan McWilliams, the following April when, having been invited to a ceremony he realised that the flag being portrayed as the original was in fact somewhat bigger than the flag that he had taken. However, it was not until the owner of the yacht had asked to borrow it back for a fund raising event that the truth became known.

Exactly where the original flag is today, and who took it, is a remains a complete mystery. What is certain, however, is that the flag that stood to symbolise so much has long since disappeared into history to become as elusive as the individual who removed it.

It would seem that, to some, nothing is truly sacred.
