Forget about online dating, stand-up comedienne Sarha DiMuro, aged 29, has decided to cut to the chase with an online campaign that she hopes will culminate with her loosing her virginity before her thirtieth birthday. In an interview with New York’s Jane Magazine, whose web site is currently accepting nominations, she states that she is looking for “a nice, good–smelling, tall guy” with whom to do the deed before November 7th.
Whilst I strongly expect that self-publicity it the key motivation here, I cannot help but wonder whether she has fully considered what sort of suitor such a campaign could possibly serve to attract other than those who will no doubt see her as a means of publicising themselves. Of course, in the meantime, this entire escapade serves as great material for her weblog and no doubt a great many more column inches.
I do not have any particular moral stance concerning this story, but what I do find most curious is this. If she is still a virgin at 29 then the issue of who she has sex with has got to have meant something to her – after all, she is hardly unattractive in appearance - and yet, having abstained for so many years, she is now willing to, for want of a better term, “auction” her virginity away by nomination
If this is indeed a carefully orchestrated exercise to secure not only a wider audience but a steady stream of material to publish in her weblog, then I hope that she ultimately feels fulfilled with the hits her exploits return. And, let’s face it, if her audience dwindles once her cherry’s been popped she could always stage a comeback – how about “Non-Virgin Looking for Something Meaningful from a Relationship” (though I accept this sounds no where near as catchy).
